Tower of Saint Stephen

There are many reasons to start a route through Maramures in Baia Mare, and the fact that this city is the county capital is just one of them. The city is one full of tourist attractions of a diversity and cultural richness that captivates visitors and can keep them busy for hours. Having only one day at your disposal, I recommend a first stop at the Tower of Saint Stephen from which the panorama of the entire city is one of story.

Libertatii Square is the old town center, an ideal place for a short walk before lunch in one of the specific restaurants in the area. The area of the historical center of the city includes over 20 of the oldest buildings, built starting with XV century.

A penultimate stop before leaving the city of Baia Mare to more remote areas of Maramures is the Butcher's Bastion or the Tower of the Mountains. And if you want to be clear you should not miss the MINERALOGY MUSEUM where the largest collection of minerals in Europe has been gathered. The initial collection was subsequently increased by donations and acquisitions, exceeding over 20 000 copies. The museum opened in 1989 in the presence of a large audience. The museum has several types of collections: mineral collection, rock collection, ore collection and fossil collection. Most of the permanent exhibits originate in the Maramures area. For a relaxing walk and possibly a bath 20 minutes we can start a 20-minute hike to LAKE FIRIZA 17 km from the city. In the event that you have energy, especially beautiful is the BLUE LAKE in Baia Sprie, the only lake in Europe that changes colors depending on the day, the season. We will start towards the historical area of Maramures, or over the hill, as the Maramures say. We can stop for a coffee or breakfast at the Mara Pastravaria, then the next stop will be at Ocna Sugatag. Ocna Sugatag is a spa resort located in the heart of Maramures isoric. The locality comprises three other villages: Breb (a very popular tourist location, even King Charles has a house here ), Hoteni and Sat-Sugatag.

Barsana MONASTERY is one of the representative areas for the entire Maramures. Here, the wooden constructions harmonize perfectly with nature and the monasteries seem literally torn from a corner of heaven.

After silence and relaxation in the courtyard of the monastery com start to Sapanta, where there are also accommodation options. The most popular location from the historical area is the Merry Cemetery of Sapanta, the work of the craftsman Stan Patras - 1935. The crosses engraved and colored by the master Stan Patras and his disciples represent in simple, naive lyrics the life of the deceased, both through his achievements and his bad habits, this gives it a touch of special originality and uniqueness all over the world.

We have time to look a little at all the street streets exposed in front of the cemetery, possibly to eat a pie made like at home 'Mom , then the next stop will be THE MEMORIAL OF PAIN from Sighetu Marmatiei.

The Memorial of the Victims of Communism and of the Resistance consists of the museum located in the former political prison of Sighetu Marmatiei and the international center of studies on communism based in Bucharest. The memorial aims to reconstruct and preserve the memory of the Romanian resistance. The prison was initially a common law prison, built in 1987, then in August 1948 it became a detention place for a group of students, pupils and peasants. Then, over the years, hundreds of dignitaries from all over the country (former ministers, academics, economists, military, historians, journalists, politicians), some of them convicted of heavy punishments, others not even prosecuted.

There is a possibility to visit the VILLAGE MUSEUM, but if fatigue says its word, stay for a walk at the evening clock through the beautiful city.

After a hearty breakfast, we can start on the last active forest railway in the Carpathians , MOCANITA DIN VISEU where on a dream route you can enjoy the amazing nature and mountains of the area .

Another objective , Cailor Waterfall is located near the tourist resort of Borsa, in the North-East part of the Rodnei Mountains. The water gathered in a glacial circus drains over a steep limestone called ”Podul Cailor”, in several steps, resulting in the largest waterfall in Romania. It is at an altitude of 1300 m and the water fall is 90 meters, the highest in Romania . It has a beautiful legend and this waterfall.
The wooden church from SIEU , a UNESCO monument, is one of the important objectives to visit.
