Nestled on Doboieș Hill, just 3 km from downtown Sighetu Marmației, the Maramureșean Village Museum showcases Romania's rich folk architecture.
About the Museum
Inaugurated on May 30, 1981, the museum was established by Francisc Nistor and Mihai Dăncuș to preserve key monuments of folk architecture, featuring structures from the 16th to 19th centuries. It highlights the cultural diversity of the Maramureș region, including influences from Jewish, German, Ukrainian, and Hungarian communities.
Key Features
The museum displays traditional houses and peasant architecture from various sub-areas of Maramureș, emphasizing the harmonious coexistence of different cultures. It is recognized internationally, being a member of the ICOM and UNESCO networks. Significant events include the 16th European Association of Open Air Museums conference and the 2019 Michelin Guide recognition, where it received 2 stars.
