How to Get There:
A parking lot is conveniently located near the entrance, and a short 100-meter walk will take you to the main gate, marked by a tall bell tower.
Historical Significance:
Bârsana Monastery dates back to 1390, with the first mention in documents relating to the Dragoș family’s estate. Through the years, it has been referenced in various property deeds, with significant mentions between 1408 and 1480, the last of which cites Bartolomeu Dragfi, the Voivode of Transylvania. The original wooden church was constructed in 1711, a tribute to God after surviving the previous year’s plague.
In 1993, work began on the new monastic complex, which today includes the following:
- The main church: "Soborul celor 12 Apostoli"
- A summer altar
- The bell tower
- Nuns' quarters
- A museum
All structures are built from wood, adhering to traditional Maramureș craftsmanship. The church’s interior is adorned with hand-carved wood, vaulted ceilings, and intricate decorations, representing a beautiful blend of Orthodox artistry and peasant genius.
Spiritual and Cultural Importance:
As part of the Romanian Orthodox Diocese of Maramureș and Sătmar, Bârsana Monastery symbolizes the rich Orthodox tradition and artistic heritage of the region. The tranquil atmosphere makes it ideal for pilgrims and tourists alike, offering a peaceful retreat from the busy world. The intricate wood carvings, beautiful frescoes, and serene surroundings leave a lasting impression on all who visit.
Bârsana is more than a religious site – it’s a symbol of Romania’s spiritual heritage, offering a deep connection to faith, history, and culture.
